The number of casualties has not been confirmed in Nigeria, hours after reports of a deadly attack on football fans in the town of Mubi. Sources have not yet been able to confirm the venue where the blast hit.

The details of an attack on a football venue in the northeastern Nigerian town of Mubi remained murky into the early hours of Monday morning. Local authorities confirmed the previous evening that an explosion had caused a heavy death toll without being able to give exact figures.

A policeman speaking to news agency AFP estimated that at least 40 lives were claimed.

However, the Reuters news agency quoted a security source as saying the death toll remained uncertain.

So far we have 14 dead while 12 are injured, some of them critically, Adamawa state police spokesperson Usman Abubakar told Reuters.

It also remained unclear whether the bomb had targeted a local television viewing center for football or the football match itself. It reportedly exploded near an area where there are also a number of beer halls.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Mubi is roughly 845 kilometers (525 miles) northeast of the Nigerian capital Abuja and lies close to the countrys border with Cameroon.

Nigeria has seen a sharp rise in attacks by the Isamist militant group Boko Haram in recent weeks. The terrorist organization has staged repeated attacks on the civilian population in a bid to overthrow the government and usher in a (strict) Islamic state. The organization operates in the northeastern region of Nigeria. Its name translates to Western education is sin.

On-loan Chievo Verona striker Victor Obinna Nsofor failed to make the trip to the World Cup in Brazil because of a resurgent knee problem. The forward alongside Sunday Mba, Joel Obi, Chrisantus Ejike Uzoenyi, Daniel Akpeyi, Nnamdi Oduamadi and Nosa Igiebor completes names of seven players excluded from the Super Eagles squad ahead of its fifth appearance on the biggest stage in world football. Nsofor (has) a little bit of knee problem, but he was still pushing, Keshi explained to AfricanFootball.com.

Sunday Mba Arrived Three Days After the Super Eagles Training Camp Had Resumed Due to a Much Publicised Visa Hitches.

The CSKA Moscow supporting striker, 27, whose beautiful free-kick against Ethiopia in Calabar sealed the 2014 World Cup berth for Nigeria in November, suffered a relapse of his cruciate knee problem prior to the friendly encounter against Scotland last week. He would later sit out training on Thursday and Friday, after scans were conducted to determine the extent of the injury and returned with the rest of the squad in Philadelphia, USA, on Saturday. The Beijing 2008 silver medalist will now wait to improve on his 12 goals in 47 international caps. Anther notable exclusion from the teams final list Obi was also a victim of injury, according to the coach, while the scorer of Afcon 2013-winning goal Mba lacked the necessary bite and push, despite joining the team late in London due to visa hitches. Joel (has) a little bit of ankle problem, but he was still trying, added Keshi. I just didnt want to risk it. But I am happy I spent a little time with him. For Sunday Mba, his lateness to camp contributed but outside that he did not show hunger, the fight, we expected from him. We had only two and a half weeks to prepare for the World Cup and he was not giving us what we wanted. He was very relaxed and it was unlike him. Nigeria face Greece in the second of their three warm-up matches at the Philadelphia Union Stadium later in the day. The Eagles will face Iran (June 16), Bosnia and Herzegovina (June 21) and Argentina (June 25) in Group F of the World Cup.

Aurier

Arsenal face competition from another English club for Toulouse right-back Serge Aurier, according to the player’s agent.

Goal exclusively revealed in May that Arsene Wenger’s side had opened preliminary talks with the Ligue 1 club over a €9 million deal for the 21-year-old, who is lined up as a replacement for Bacary Sagna.

But Aurier’s agent, Stephane Courbis, claims Arsenal have not followed up their interest in his client, who is in Cote dIvoires 23-man World Cup squad, and has revealed another Premier League club are competing for the defender’s signature.

There is no agreement with Arsenal or anyone else, Courbis told RMC.

There have been discussions with Arsenal in the past, but its been a while since there has been any talks.

To tell you the truth, we are even talking to another English club, so there is really nothing to act upon.{GOAL}

Varane: Im not thinking about Chelsea interest

Posted by: @femi4arsenal on June 3, 2014

Varane

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane insists he is fully focused on the World Cup amid interest from Premier League club Chelsea.

The central defender has been tipped to reunite with former Real boss Jose Mourinho at Chelsea after David Luiz agreed to depart Stamford Bridge for Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Varane was an ever-present during Mourinhos final season in charge of the Madrid club, who eventually finished second behind Barcelona in 2012-13.

But the 21-year-old is not thinking about his club future as Didier Deschamps France prepare to face Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras in Group E at the World Cup in Brazil.

Right now, Im not thinking about (the interest from Chelsea), we have the World Cup ahead of us, Varane told French football programme Telefoot.

We have a young, motivated team that can do great things and has no limits.

I love the national team and contribute everything I have to them. My goal is to become a starter.

(Real Madrid assistant Zinedine Zidane) knows what it means to win the World Cup and its great talking to him about it.

While he refused to shed much light on his future, Varane was prepared to reflect on Reals triumphant Champions League display.

Real claimed their 10th European crown after overcoming La Liga champions and city rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 in Lisbon on May 24.

It was Reals first Champions League title since 2001-2002, when they edged Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in Glasgow.

La Decima is something magnificent, he said. My team-mates have waited a long time for this.

This is truly the highlight of my career. It was like I was in a bubble after the game. There was excitement and happiness.{GOAL}
